For shops, markets and specialty retail

They drive over or they don’t bother.

Let them check before they get in the car.

Somebody wants a thing you almost certainly have. They can’t tell from your site, so rather than drive across town on a maybe, they order it online from somewhere else. You never knew they were looking.

How it usually goes

Saturday

He wants a thing you almost certainly have on the shelf.

Checks

Your site can’t tell him, and he’s not driving across town on a maybe.

Orders

Buys it online from somewhere else instead.

You never knew he was looking.

Where it leaks

Four things I see again and again.

Not a list of everything that could be better — the four that actually cost this trade money.

01

Stock nobody can see

“Do you have it?” is the question, and a site that can’t answer sends them to one that can.

02

No gift cards

The easiest money in retail, and it sells hardest exactly when you’re closed.

03

Nothing to browse

A shop with no photos of what’s inside is asking people to imagine it. They won’t.

04

Hours wrong once

Get “open now” wrong a single time and they stop trusting the listing entirely.

Where I’d start

Your stock and gift cards online

Departments and items people can actually search, so the answer to “do you have it?” is on the page instead of down the phone. Gift cards and ordering where it fits the shop — and the customer’s details stay yours, not a marketplace’s.

And after that

The rest of the toolbox, when it fits.

One partner for the whole thing rather than five vendors — but only the parts that earn their place. And I work with one business per category in Klamath Falls, so I’m not building this for your competitor next month.

FAQ

Answered straight.

I can’t keep an online catalogue current.

Then I don’t build one that needs babysitting. Departments and the lines you always carry answer most of it, and you change them from your phone.

I don’t want to ship things.

Most local shops don’t. Check-before-you-drive and reserve-in-store do the work without a courier ever being involved.

Is this worth it for a small shop?

It’s worth it if people ask “do you have it?” often. If they don’t, I’ll tell you the money is better spent elsewhere.
