We're open. The door is around the back.

People pull up to Hartnell Ave, see the front of the building, and think we're closed. Drive around to the back and look for the white door — that's the way in, and the parking is right there. If you're ever unsure, call and we'll walk you in.

What just came in

When something good lands — fresh produce, a fruit that's only around for a few weeks — it goes up on our Facebook page first. If you're driving in for one thing in particular, it's worth a look before you head over.

Hard to find

The things the big stores don't carry

This is the reason people drive across town instead of settling for what the supermarket has.

Fresh rambutan, one split open to show the white fruit inside
Rambutan. Tropical fruit comes and goes — call ahead if you're driving in for something specific.
Fresh lemongrass, cilantro and bean sprouts in the produce cooler, with printed price labels

The fresh herb cooler

Lemongrass, Thai basil, cilantro, bean sprouts and Thai chilies, priced and ready — plus long beans, banana blossom and luffa in the case beside them. Fresh stock rotates, so call ahead if you're driving in for one thing.

Squid, pig feet and beef tendon in the freezer case

The cuts supermarkets skip

Pork belly, ears, feet and tripe. Beef tendon, whole catfish, squid. The parts a mainstream butcher counter in Redding won't put out — and the smoked pork, ribs and beef sold by the pound from the case up front.

Canned and jarred bamboo shoots, pickles and preserves on the shelf

Bamboo shoots, six ways

Sour, tips, strips, with bai yanang, with rattan shoot. Then krachai, pickled green peppercorns in brine, toddy palm, longan and jackfruit — the jarred aisle a real recipe sends you looking for.

The kitchen

There's a kitchen inside the grocery store

Most people come in for ingredients and leave holding lunch. Pho, sticky rice and curries, made here, with tables if you want to sit down — high chairs too.

Four boba drinks in clear cups on the counter, with black tapioca pearls in the bottom and whipped cream on top

Boba, made at the counter

Thai tea and Thai coffee, with or without the tapioca pearls. Out of everything in the store, boba is one of the four things customers bring up most in our Google reviews — people come in for groceries and walk out holding one.

Making it at home instead? The pearls, brown-sugar syrup and grass jelly are a few aisles back.

Num Wan in clear cups — layered coconut milk over pink and green jelly

Num Wan — fresh at 2:00

Tapioca pearls, coconut milk, jelly, coconut strip and a little salt. Made fresh in the afternoon — the card on the produce cart says 2:00, so come by around then.

Pho

Beef broth, rice noodles, herbs on the side. Eat in at one of the tables, or take it home.

Cooking it yourself? The rice stick and the broth base are both in the store.

Feeding a crowd

We cater. If you're feeding a group — a party, a work lunch, a family gathering — tell us the date, the headcount and roughly what you had in mind, and we'll tell you what we can do and what it runs.

Not sure what to order? Say how many people and we'll suggest something.

Call us — (530) 222-7609 Easiest way to sort it out. We'll talk it through with you.

A family store, and the one everybody's family shops at

Kanya Market has been on Hartnell Avenue since 2017. We're an Asian-owned, family-run store, and we stock for the way people here actually cook — six kitchens' worth of ingredients under one roof, plus the incense, candles and offering paper for the altar at home.
